Hiccups are still a mysterious puzzle of our body that sometimes resolves on its own and sometimes no matter how hard you try, it doesn’t resolve.

Other names of hiccups are hiccough, synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (SDF), and Singultus.

There are several questions – what happens inside our body? and why these weird sounds are coming out?

The main reason for hiccups is our diaphragm which is at the bottom of our lungs is a plate made of muscles, which helps in inhaling and exhaling.

Whenever this diaphragm contracts, our lungs are filled with air, and when it is relaxed, the air goes out (1)

How This Hiccup Sound Comes?

It is observed that whenever we have hiccups (for any reason), our brain gives a signal to tighten the diaphragm immediately.

When we inhale all the air at once, the vocal cords close suddenly, and the sound of hiccups comes due to the closure of these vocal cords.

But Why Does It Happens?

The exact reason behind the hiccups is still a mystery.

But most of the time is an analysis by researchers that our stomach if it stretches for any reason then tends to get a hiccup.

External Causes For Hiccups

This means – that for whatever reason our brain signaled our diaphragm to hiccup. here are some common reasons include:

  • Swallowing lots of air (3)
  • Excitement, crying, and fear
  • Laughing out loud and for a long time, that happened many times.
  • Sudden eating and too much

The medical condition also cause hiccups:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux – In this, stomach acid, move into the esophagus, and causes discomfort.
  • Chronic illness
  • Diseases that irritate diaphragm nerves like – lung disorder, pneumonia, and liver illness.
  • Any type of surgery that affects diaphragm control nerves causes hiccups.

Along with humans, animals also get hiccups, and not only adults get it, babies, and an unborn baby has been seen to have hiccups too.

Hiccup In Babies

Many parents are worried about hiccups in babies, and it is asked by many moms if is it normal, how many times is normal in a day?

Dr. Shruthi Kumar Bharadwaj said that – It is also a normal thing in a baby like an adult.

Hiccups are common and transient things in babies in the first year of life.

It is normal for the baby to have hiccups 2 to 3 times a day, usually, they are controllable, and rarely they are uncontrollable.

What Causes Hiccups In Babies?

The most causes include:

  • Swallowing air while feeding
  • Overfeeding
  • Use of carbonated beverages in children.
  • Sudden change in temp

Research is still trying to understand the cause of hiccups, but there is one theory that explained hiccups play a role in baby lung development.

World Record In Hiccups

According to the Guinness world records, the record for the longevity hiccups is still in the name of Charles Osborne, this hiccup started in 1922 and did not cure until 68 years later.

And the most frequent hiccup record is held, by Jennifer Mee 50 times per minute for more than 4 weeks in 2007.

Are Hiccups Dangerous?

Many people believe that hiccups are good – mean – someone is missing you, and other people believe that hiccup – is a bad sign, something will bad happen to you.

I don’t know to what extent this is true. but researcher tells that yes, hiccups for a long-time can have a bad effect on our overall health.

  • Disturb you in eating, and sleeping which may lead to sleeplessness.

NOTE: If this process is running and persists for more than 3 hours continuously it is dangerous you need to talk to the doctor.

If this comes every 2 to 3 hours and continues for 2 to 3 days, then talk to the doctor.

Tips To Get Rid of It?

There are many more folk remedies, which work, but that does not work equally for all of us.

NOTE: Hiccups are all about – distracting the brain to stop the diaphragm.

Here is the remedy that works for most people and is popular:

  • Drinking a glass of water in one breath.
  • Drinking 5 sips of water, which works for me all the time.
  • Take a deep breath hold it and then out.
  • Headstand
  • Breathe in and out in a bag, because the whole game is all about taking the air, and out.
  • Eat a teaspoon of granulated sugar also known as white, or regular sugar.
  • Drink cold water, or you can suck ice cubs which is very effective to distract the mind.
  • Lemon juice or you can just lick the lemon.
  • Chamomile herb – This herb has muscle-relaxing properties, so it will relax the diaphragm and stop the nerve that triggers hiccups.
  • Distract yourself by doing whatever you like
  • Scary things, suddenly distract your mind and alert you, but the scare must be genuine.

If all these hacks and tips are not worked on you, and you are still facing it, then talk to the doctor, something doesn’t seem right.

There is medicines also available that has been used such as – baclofen, chlorpromazine, gabapentin, metoclopramide, and various other drugs.

Precaution To Prevent Hiccup

There is no one reason why these happen to us, and everyone can get it for different reasons. and it is the reason that can prevent it like:

  • Eating very fast, and excessively – so avoid eating fast, and eat at the limit
  • Carbonated beverages – so avoid an excessive amount of this
  • Drinking alcohol – so drink a small amount and slowly
  • Laughing – So control your laughing emotion
  • Excitement, and fear – so remain calm, by doing yoga, meditation

So here are some reasons, by improving which you can eliminate the problem of the hiccup.
