Allergy

Allergy occurs when the Immune system reacts to everyday things like food, animals, pollen and insect stings.

Moreover, about 20 to 30% of the total population in India suffers from at least one allergic disease. I am also one of them.

Allergy is an overreaction of our immune system to usually harmless substances like Pollen, certain animals, peanuts, milk, etc. These substances are called allergens.

Our immune system has WBCs or lymphocytes which protect us from foreign invaders. such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc these invaders are called antigens.

When a lymphocyte detects an antigen, it produces antibodies. antibodies destroy antigens, and thus, protect us.

And our immune system normally adjusts to our environment. For example, when your body encounters something that causes harm.

Then our immune system becomes aware, and he gets ready for that. And in pets, allergies make the immune system more sensitive.

History

The concept of allergy was originally introduced in 1906 by the Viennese paediatrician Clemens von pirquet after they noticed that patients who had received injections of horse serum or smallpox vaccine usually had quicker, more severe reactions to second injections.

Pirquet called this phenomenon “allergy” from the Ancient Greek word “allos“.

Allergic diseases have become a major health concern worldwide, with India being no exception.

Currently, more than 25% of the total population of India is sensitized to different forms of allergens.

Allergies are common in the developed world, about 20% of people are affected by allergies. and about 6% of people have at least one food allergy.

The main sources of allergens in this subcontinent are:

  • Pollen
  • just particles
  • fungal spores
  • certain foods
  • insects sting
  • certain animals like Furry dogs, cats, mice, Birds, etc.

Skin Allergies

Skin allergies may be signs or symptoms of an allergy. they may also be the direct result of exposure to an allergen.

Skin serves a vital purpose as the barrier that protects the inside of the body.

It is filled with special cells of the immune system that can protect the body and skin from viruses, bacteria, and other hidden threats.

Irritation and allergic reactions can also cause itchy skin. The result of the skin is a red, itchy rash that can include small blisters or bumps.

Types of skin allergies include:

  • Rashes: Rashes are one of the common symptoms of a skin allergy.
  • Sore throat: Pharynx or throat is irritated or inflamed.
  • Watery eyes: Eyes may be swollen or itchy and look puffy.
  • Burning: Skin inflammation leads to discomfort and stinging sensations on the skin.
  • Eczema: Patches of skin become inflamed and can itch and bleed.
  • Burning: Skin burning leads to discomfort and stinging sensations on the skin.

Touching clothing, pets, chemicals, soaps, and substances such as poison ivy or cosmetics can trigger allergic reactions.

Food allergies can also cause the skin to itch.

Signs/Symptoms of Allergy

Allergy symptoms, which depend on the substance involved, can affect your digestive system, nasal passages, skin, and sinuses.

It simply means symptoms of allergies (Asthma, skin reaction, conjunctivitis, etc.) depend on the type of allergen and the port of entry.

Below you see, that different organs of our body are affected by it or they will know different symptoms including:

Affected organSigns and symptoms
SkinRashes,(eczema and hives), and certain food
EyesWatery eyes, swollen, reddening eyes, and itching of the conjunctiva
AirwaysSneezing, Coughing, Wheezing, and sometimes outright attacks of asthma, and in certain cases, the airway constricts due to swelling.
NoseFrequent sneezing, runny nose, and in severe cases swelling nasal.
SinusesAllergic sinusitis
Earspain, lack of hearing, and lack of eustachian tube drainage
Gastrointestinal tractAbdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and vomiting

An Allergic reaction can range from mild to severe. in some severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.

The season can also be responsible for allergies including:

  • A runny nose
  • swollen eyes
  • watery eyes
  • congestion

Talk to the doctor. if the symptoms occur more frequently or affect your daily life.

Causes of Allergy

An allergy starts when our immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader.

A particular antibody called immunoglobin or IGE causes allergic reactions antibodies are released to combat foreign and potentially harmful substances in the body.

The immunoglobin is released to destroy the allergen and causes the production of chemicals that trigger the allergic reaction.

One of the chemicals is called histamine and the walls of blood vessels also instructs the lining of the nose to produce more mucus.

Common causes of allergies inlclude:

Food

Food allergies are caused by protein in food to which our immune system overreacts.

Severe allergies can lead to other allergies which can combine with diseases like asthma and become life-threatening problems.

Different people have different allergies to different foods, and 90% of allergic responses to foods are caused by cow’s milk, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish.

Some estimates suggest up to 3 to 5% of Indians may already have food allergies, the majority of these under 40 years of age.

Stings

Typically, insects which also be responsible for allergic reactions such as:

  • Bees
  • hornets
  • ants and wasps are stinging insects
  • biting insects such as ticks, mosquitoes, etc.

Genetics

The allergic disease can also be genetic, and those children’s allergies are likely to be more severe than those in children of non-allergic parents.

Several studies have shown that IgE levels are highest in childhood and fall rapidly between the ages of 10 and 30 years.

Certain Medicines

You may be allergic to some medicine and about 10% of people report that they are allergic to penicillin (a group of antibiotics used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.)

Hygiene Hypothesis

The Hygiene hypothesis states that early childhood exposure to particular microorganisms protects against allergic diseases by contributing to the development of the immune system.

How Do Doctors Diagnose Allergies?

A man donating blood

A doctor can diagnose allergies in several ways.

First, The doctor will ask the patient questions regarding symptoms when they occur how often, and what seems to cause them.

May also ask the person with symptoms whether there is a family history of allergies and if other household members have allergies.

And finally – A blood test and skin tests will confirm your allergies.

For the blood tests, doctors take some blood samples and add antibiotics to them.

That will react with the allergies so that you will be able to detect your allergy.

Skin tests and blood tests are equally cost-effective, and health economic evidence shows that both tests were cost-effective compared with no tests.

Early and more accurate diagnoses save costs due to reduced consultations, referrals to secondary care, misdiagnosis, and emergency admissions.

Proper allergy testing can help you pinpoint your exact triggers, which makes them easier.

Treatment of Allergy

The best option to prevent allergies is to stay away from whatever triggers the reaction.

If that’s not possible, there are two treatment (home remedy, medicine) options available.

Home-remedy

Yoga, therapies, and Herbal medications are the best ways to treat allergies.

Yoga is the best and my first option to stop an allergic reaction if you are allergic to frequent sneezing.

In this case, anulom vilom, kapal bhati, child pose, and Surya namaskar are some of the yoga that will help you in reducing allergies.

If we talk about some food, then firstly, turmeric milk, and green vegetables such as broccoli, kale, onions, and garlic, which have proved very beneficial for me as well.

Medicines

Allergy treatment often includes medications like antihistamines to control symptoms.

NOTE: Keep in mind that before taking any allergy medicine, consult a doctor.

According to him, he will give you the right allergy medicines after seeing you.

Some allergy medicines like:

  • Brompheniramine (Dimetane)
  • Chlorpheniramine
  • Fexofenadine (Allegra)
  • Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
  • Omeo allergy tablets
  • Montelukast tablets

The last two medicines come in the popular allergy relief tablet in India.

By the way, allergic reactions seriously occur when you are allergic to something and it enters your body in large amounts.

In such a situation, it can also be a matter of concern. don’t take it lightly, consult your doctor.

Prevention Tips for Allergy

The best option to prevent allergies is to stay away from the allergens that trigger them.

An elimination diet can help you determine the cause of your allergies so you know how to avoid them.

If you are allergic to continue sneezing, then stay away from places where excess just, dirt blows up.

For example, I am also allergic to soil, and dust, so I avoid those places, if it is not possible then I wear a mask.

If a pregnant woman is allergic, she can consume Fish oil supplements during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk. (but ask a doctor first.)

Probiotic supplements during pregnancy or infancy may help to prevent atopic dermatitis.

Avoiding is the most effective way to prevent food allergy symptoms.
