Dark spots are one of the worst things that pimples and acne leaves on our skin, especially for dark-skinned individuals.

It is those areas of skin that are darker than the surrounding skin.

Dark spots also known as hyperpigmentation can occur in any part of the body, mostly on the face, arms, and hands, which is more shown on darker skin.

It disappears naturally on its own, but it takes too much time such as 3 to 5 months, depending on how severe the dark spot is.

Dark spots which I personally experienced, and I did every possible thing to clear my dark spots, but after the dermatologist suggested it’s disappear to extent level.

I hate this because it lowers your self-confidence, and treating it naturally becomes very difficult, and both males and females face it.

In addition, Age spots known as solar lentigines caused by excessive melanin production due to UV exposure.

Causes of Dark Spots

Dark spots can occur due to several reasons such as acne, hormonal disbalance, sun exposure, skin injuries, etc.

However, the main reason for dark spots is excessive melanin (a substance in our body that is responsible for hair, skin and eye colour).

But there are several reasons which trigger our excessive melanin such as:

Acne: Acne is a condition that occurs when pores in the skin get blocked by dead skin and oil, causing pimples and acne.

Sun exposure: It is most common cause of dark spots is sun UV rays, which boost the melanin secretion and cause hyperpigmentation.

If you already have dark spots, then use sunscreen which prevents UV rays (which are responsible for darkening the spots)

Hormonal disbalance: It mostly occurs during pregnancy, and the menstrual cycle, and due to birth control pills use causes hormonal imbalance.

Skin injuries: Any type of skin injury like burns, cuts, or insect bites can trigger hyperpigmentation as skin recovery.

Pollution: Air pollution where little air particles like carbon, dust particles, and so on are stuck on your skin, and contribute to pimples, causing acne.

Blue light: It is a specific type of light whose wavelength is shorter and has higher energy reached than other lights such as the sun, and device light.

Stomach health: Studies have shown that gut health is related to skin health. Constipation, and not doing poop on time lead to acne.

Treatment of Dark Spot

Dark spots are not harmful, but occurring more in the face area can lower self-confidence.

However it disappears on its own, but it takes too much time, so it is important to consult a dermatologist for proper treatment (2)

If you don’t know your face type, then we do not recommend you use any remedy or medicine, Is good for you to talk to a skin doctor.

A Dermatologist can suggest acne-fighting or reducing pills, cream for lighting the dark spots, and sunscreen.

Make sure to use sunscreen before going in the sun, it prevents UV from making your dark spot more darker.

Do not take without prescribed medicines because I experienced it, where without prescribed medicine worse the face skin.

Home-Remedies of Dark Spots

There are no magic remedies for fading the dark spots marks, so make sure consult to a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

However, several remedies reduce the chance of acne (responsible for dark spots) including:

Aloe Vera

It contains antibacterial properties, which reduce the chance of inflammation and control excessive oil secretion.

A study suggests that yellow aloe vera was not only useful in treating acne but was also shown to be effective in synergistic interactions with clove basil.

Neem

It has anti-fungal, anti-biotic, antiseptic, anti-infection, and anti-inflammatory agents which help in healing wounds, and clearing the skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV juice contains natural acids like citrus extract that have been found to kill P.acnes (skin inflammation) (3).

But make sure direct application to the skin can cause a burning sensation, so make sure to take a small patch test to prevent irritation (4)

Green Tea

A study where 20 individuals are included which have mild to moderate acne, were given 2% of green tea lotion for 6 weeks.

The resulting study found that 2% of green tea lotions were more effective than pretreatment (2).

One more study reveals that applying green tea extract to the skin reduces the production of sebum and pimples in those with skin inflammation.

Vitamin C

It is also known as ascorbic acid, which has been used for good skin health including reducing acne, pimples, and fading dark spots.

It contains antioxidants and boosts collagen production which contributes to brighter and enhanced skin more young.

Sourceamla (Indian gooseberry), oranges, strawberries, kale, citrus fruits, and broccoli, are rich in vitamin C.

Importance of Sunscreen

Sunscreen is very vital to add to your healthy skincare routine because it protects the skin against several environmental damages.

Here are why sunscreen is important to add to your skincare habit:

It prevents skin Cancer: Studies have shown that excessive sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, especially light skin colour people.

A 2020 study found that using sunscreen daily reduces the 50% chance of production of melanin compared to non-users.

Reduce sunburns and tanning: It prevents direct contact with the skin, so if you live near the sea, then it’s good to apply sunscreen there.

Daily sunlight is an ideal source of vitamin D, and to maintain this vitamin D, 10 to 30 minutes of sunlight, several times per week is good enough.

Prevent premature ageing: UV rays contribute to wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and fine lines, and Sunscreen helps slow down ageing and promote young skin.

A new study has shown using sunscreen daily reduces fine lines, and wrinkles to an extent level, compared to others.

Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which works as a shield to your skin, as well as protects your skin from both UV-A and UV-B rays.
