Fever also known as pyrexia, hyperthermia and elevate temp is a very common illness that acts as an alarm.

It is caused by a viral infection, and if it comes frequently, it indicates some disease. however, getting a fever means the body is fighting the disease.

Fever is a very common illness, like cough, and cold, which goes on its own most of the time.

The increase in body temp more than normal is called fever. and it informs us that there is something wrong with our bodies.

Our body’s normal temp usually comes b/w 37°C (98.6 degrees F, however, each person’s normal body temp is slightly different.

How Does Our Body Produce Fever?

Our body core temp is maintained by thermoregulation, which generally keeps our temperature around 98.6 degrees F.

This mechanism is controlled by the brain’s hypothalamus, which detects body temp and sends signals accordingly throughout the body.

In case of fever, the hypothalamus produces signals that activate our sweat glands and make blood vessels expand, moving blood closer to the skin’s surface – all of which release heat and cool down body temp.

Most of the time viral infection is the reason for the fever, but there are some other reasons and side effects that cause fever which include:

Basically, When our body knows that there is danger inside the body, then it raises the body temp so that pathogens can be killed.

Does Fever Indicate Disease?

Yes, It works as an indicator of the disease, if it is frequent and more at night then, it tells that there is something wrong with the body.

Although, viral infections such as colds, and flu also cause fever, which goes away on its own or by taking medicines.

Symptoms of fever

Based on what causes fever, its symptoms can be seen, and there are common symptoms which include:

  • Sweating, especially at night
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • An increase in normal body temperature is the biggest symptom.
  • Weakness
  • Inability to work and falling asleep
  • Being irritable
  • Loss of appetite

Some people may see other symptoms including:

  • Dizziness
  • Increased in heartbeat
  • Chills, even in summer
  • Vomiting

  • Skin rash

Which Diseases Cause Fever?

Some common illnesses that cause this illness are:

Typhoid fever – Typhoid is a bacterial disease caused by Salmonella typhi, and these bacteria come from contaminated food and water.

Covid – also known as coronavirus is a kind of virus that primarily affects our respiratory system, due to which many lives were lost in 2020, and starting in 2021.

Malaria – is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is spread by a mosquito. And fever, chills, and diarrhea are common symptoms of malaria.

Hay fever – Hay is also called “Seasonal allergy“, it is a common allergy that is caused by Pollen and just, affects the eyes, and nose.

Dengue – It is spread by the lady mosquito, which injects virus inside us, causing fever, Headache, joint pain, weakness, etc.

Children are more prone to illness, and fever can be a common sign of an infection in children.

In young children, this is very normal, especially those children who play in dusty areas and put things in their mouths.

  • Teething in babies
  • Bacteria and viruses

If you have a thermometer, so you easily check the temperature, or just touch the forehead and neck.

Here are some simple tips that reduce fever in children are:

  • Dress them in light cloth
  • Put a cold washcloth on their forehead.
  • Take rest
  • Drink more liquid, because during illness our body works hard, so it uses more water, due to which there may be a lack of water in the child’s body.

If this is not working, then take your child to the doctor, and they’ll tell you what’s good for your baby.

NOTE: So make sure to always show children to the Paediatrician.

You can check it in many ways for both adults and children which include:

  • By using thermometer
  • Touching forehead, and neck

What Treatments Are Available?

As I told you earlier, there can be many reasons for the occurrence of fever and it depends on its cause and how will it be treated.

If it is caused by a viral infection, bacteria, and virus, so only by taking antibiotics and some medicines the fever goes down.

The most common treatment for this include:

  • OTC over-the-counter medicines.
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines.

NOTE: Sometimes it goes automatically, because of the Immune system, but not in children.

If it comes frequently, especially at night, then it indicates that something inside the body is not good, then talk to the doctor.

Self-Treatment At Home

You can treat fever at home are:

  • By drinking more water and liquid
  • Make sure to take a rest
  • Put a cold cloth on the forehead
  • Take warm bath
  • Eat light food like soup, oatmeal, porridge, etc

How To Prevent From Fever?

It indicates illness, it is clear and we should take these steps to avoid these diseases that cause fever.

Here are some tips that can help reduce your exposure are:

  • Always wash your hands, before eating, and drinking, especially after using the toilet.
  • Teach your children – how to clean themselves, by doing some easy steps.
  • Carry hand sanitiser, which is necessary for this covid situation, so make sure, when you are outside keep sanitizing your hands.
  • Wear masks, especially in the rush area, and dust area.
  • Don’t eat anyone’s food, and if you are sick don’t share your cloth, and food with others.

Fever works as an indicator of the illness, if it is frequent or occurs at night then, it tells that there is something wrong inside the body.

It is common in children and adults where over-the-counter medicines treat the fever.

In severe case like high fever, night sweats, diarrhea, headache, and any discomfort person should talk to the doctor.
